Bolt Design System

2018
Design system • Pegasystems

Role:
Lead digital designer, stakeholder, visual design lead
Team: product owner (ux lead), ux designer, 2 front-end engineers, digital marketing team (clients and content authors), full-stack developers

Problem:
7 web properties serviced by 3 different teams. Visual language inconsistent across all properties. Stakeholders wanted to move faster and easier.
Opportunity: The last project was a failure in scope, execution, and the finished product. The design handoff was painful. We didn’t share a common language and we were delivering overly complex redlines. Marketing initiated a rebrand that required a rethink of the current holistic web experience. Single front-end developer was causing a bottleneck in delivering at the speed stakeholders demanded.

Action: Started small and scaled systematically. Collaborated to establish typography, colors, spacing, buttons, bands, and cards. Design toolset established with use of Abstract and Sketch for the ideal design collaboration. We used InVision to reduce friction with design handoff and were able to present ideas early and often with stakeholders.
Result: 3x faster at designing new components and templates. 4x faster at building experiences. 3 web properties are now wired to the design system. We now have a unified visual language, accessibility is a critical component to how the system is set up, and we have a first class tool for users to author new pages and experiences.
